PRO PROFILE: Robbie Malinoski

Last season started with a bang for two-time AMSOIL Championship Snocross (ACS) champion Robbie Malinoski. After just missing out on victory in the inaugural AMSOIL DOMINATOR race, Malinoski took the checkered flag the next day in the first points race of the season. The two-time Winter X Games medalist carried the momentum through the winter, finishing the season third overall. At 31, Malinoski is considered an elder statesman in the world of snocross, but his passion to race is as strong as anyone’s. As he told AMSOIL Racing, his #4 Ski-Doo is dialed in for the season opener in Duluth, Minn. and he’s ready to hit the snow.

AMSOIL Racing: Ross Martin got the better of you in the DOMINATOR race last year. How difficult is that race and what are your plans to win it this year?

Malinoski: The race is not too bad; it’s heads-up racing, so your focus is just on one guy, which makes life a little easier. The plan this year is the same: wide open for two laps and let the rest fall into place.

AMSOIL Racing: Compared to some riders, you started in snocross at a later age. What were you doing until then and what got you into the sport?

Malinoski: I was at a crossroads in my life at the time I started. I had just graduated from high school and was searching for some direction, so my dad gave me an option to work at his shop in exchange for a season of racing, and I never looked back. Before that, motocross was all that I was doing.

AMSOIL Racing: Is there one victory in your career that means more than any of the others?

Malinoski: I think last year in Duluth was one that I will always hold on to. It took place in AMSOIL’s backyard, and I came out swinging. I have never experienced so much excitement from staff and sponsors than following that win.

AMSOIL Racing: You’ve won ACS championships and Winter X Games medals. What’s left for you to accomplish in snowmobile racing?

Malinoski: As a racer, you never feel like you have made it, and maybe that’s why I am still racing. I think if that feeling ever sets in, then I know that I have raced my last race. But I am more hungry than ever, and I still get nervous before every race.

AMSOIL Racing: Last summer you took on a unique role – fighting forest fires. How did that come about?

Malinoski: I had called [team owner] Steve [Scheuring] that summer and told him if he had some jobs that he needed done, I was his man. So he called and said there was a fire down south, and that [head mechanic] Tony [Clement] and I were leaving the next morning. Then I was gone, so I never had a moment to think about what I was getting into. That’s how it all came to be; it was a great experience.

The 2012/13 AMSOIL Championship Snocross season begins with the Duluth National November 23-25. Watch the action live throughout the weekend at www.amsoilracing.com.

10,000 Mile Oil Change

AMSOIL XL Extended Life Synthetic Motor Oils provide better wear control, high- and low-temperature protection and increased fuel economy compared to conventional oils. Formulated with extended-drain boost technology, AMSOIL XL Synthetic Motor Oils provide superior performance for up to 10,000-miles/six months, or longer when recommended in owner’s manuals or indicated by electronic oil life monitoring systems.

AMSOIL, the leader in automotive synthetic lubrication, produced the world’s first API-qualified synthetic motor oil in 1972. Trust the extensive experience of AMSOIL, the First in Synthetics®, to do the best job protecting your engine.

Extended-Drain Boost Technology

During normal engine operation, the combustion process creates acidic by-products that can lead to internal component corrosion and a reduction in the life expectancy of the engine oil and engine itself. Formulated with extended-drain boost technology, AMSOIL XL Synthetic Motor Oils employ high-quality synthetic base stocks and a unique additive chemistry to neutralize acids longer than conventional oils. The extra additive package effectively raises the Total Base Number (TBN), a measure of an oil’s useful service life, and provides superior protection and performance throughout the entire drain interval.

Lower Maintenance Costs

Cost-conscious motorists, business owners and fleet managers benefit from the extended drain intervals and wear protection of AMSOIL XL Synthetic Motor Oils. While frequent oil changes are expensive, time consuming and inconvenient, longer drain intervals reduce costs and environmental impact, while increased wear control can reduce maintenance costs. With AMSOIL XL Synthetic Motor Oils, motorists realize the convenience and cost savings of extended drain intervals while also providing vehicles with maximum protection.

Improve Fuel Economy

Formulated with friction modifiers, AMSOIL XL Synthetic Motor Oils are fuel-efficient oils that reduce friction-related energy loss. They provide better fuel economy compared to conventional, non-fuel-efficient motor oils.

Maintain Low Emissions

AMSOIL XL Synthetic Motor Oils are friendly toward modern emissions control systems, promoting proper operation of catalytic converters for optimum service life and low exhaust emissions.

Hot- and Cold-Engine Protection

AMSOIL XL Synthetic Motor Oils are multi-viscosity formulations. Compared to conventional oils, they better resist the effects of thermal breakdown, including evaporation and viscosity loss, while remaining fluid in cold temperatures for easier cold starts and fast start-up circulation.

Keep Engines Clean

Fortified with detergent and dispersant additives, AMSOIL XL Synthetic Motor Oils are engineered to resist sludge and carbon deposits better than conventional oils. They promote clean operation for longer-lasting, better-running engines.

Bid Appropriate

AMSOIL XL Synthetic Motor Oils fulfill the requirements of most public and private purchasing bids. They are cost effective, making them ideal where synthetic motor oil is specified.

APPLICATIONS

AMSOIL XL Synthetic Motor Oils are excellent for use in all types of gasoline-fueled vehicles. They are recommended for all domestic and foreign vehicles requiring any of the listed performance specifications:

XLF 5W-30 Synthetic Motor Oil

DECC's new arena bears AMSOIL name

AMSOIL, the Superior-based maker of synthetic motor oil, is paying $6 million over 20 years for the right to name the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center’s new arena, AMSOIL Arena, according to a source with knowledge of the deal.

AMSOIL, the Superior-based maker of synthetic motor oil, is paying $6 million over 20 years for the right to name the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center’s new arena, AMSOIL Arena, according to a source with knowledge of the deal.
This is not the first time AMSOIL has bought the naming rights for a local event or attraction. The annual snocross event at Spirit Mountain is named the AMSOIL Duluth National Snocross.
Construction on the $70 million arena began in April 2009. The arena will include 6,700 seats and an NHL-sized ice sheet. The University of Minnesota Duluth hockey teams will begin playing in the arena next winter

The UMD men will play North Dakota on Dec. 30 in the arena’s first game.
AMSOIL founder, president and CEO Albert J. Amatuzio is a native of Duluth’s Raleigh Street. He served 25 years in the Air Guard as a jet fighter pilot. He founded AMSOIL after retiring from the military and after observing characteristics of synthetic oil in jet engines — reduced engine wear, good performance in extreme temperatures and long life. He thought that synthetic oil also could be used in automobiles.

The first can of AMSOIL 10W-40 appeared on the market in 1972.
Amatuzio has received numerous awards since founding AMSOIL. He was inducted into the Superior Business Hall of Fame last year.
