Growing Synthetic Motor Oil Market Bodes Well for AMSOIL Business Opportunity

According to Erika Vela, crankcase technologist with Infineum USA, North America’s premium synthetic motor oil market is growing  8 percent annually despite a flat-to-declining overall engine oil market. The eroding value of synthetic-blend motor oils is one contributing factor, she said. “The value of synthetic blend claims has deteriorated over time and is now on par with conventional claims,” said Vela. While synthetic blend oils are failing to resonate with motorists, the opposite is true of premium synthetic oils, increasing sales opportunities for AMSOIL Dealers.

An increasing number of consumers favor premium synthetics due to extended drain intervals, increased fuel efficiency and better wear protection. “Premium performance has value for the consumer,” Vela said. AMSOIL extended-drain synthetic motor oils continue to provide motorists the best overall value, ensuring the rock-solid AMSOIL business opportunity continues allowing Dealers of all levels to achieve their goals.

History! It was only a matter of time

History!

It was only a matter of time before the AMSOIL/Scheuring Speed Sports team - snocross' version of the NBA's Miami Heat - put all three of their superstar racers up on the box in an AMSOIL Championship Snocross, presented by Traxxas, event.

And that time was Sunday at the AMSOIL Duluth National, presented by Bully Dog.

Wrapping up the CJ Ramstad Cup weekend at Duluth's Spirit Mountain in front of one of the largest crowds to gather for a snowmobile race in this hemisphere, Robbie Malinoski (AMSOIL/Ski-Doo) made it two-in-a-row by pulling the Stud Boy Holeshot and leading the weekend's final race wire-to-wire for the win. Malinoski was joined on the box by teammates Tim Tremblay (2nd), who also podiumed on Saturday (3rd), and a first-ever Pro Open podium finish for Darrin Mees (3rd).

Quite literally, there was no stopping Ski-Doo's Robbie Malinoski this past weekend at Duluth. The powerful veteran racer - who hadn't doubled up at an AMSOIL Championship Snocross weekend since 2006 - swept both Pro Open main events at Duluth in convincing fashion, taking the points lead into rounds three and four of ACS in Bessemer, Mich., along with making a serious statement in regards to whether Malinoski still had what it takes to win at snocross' highest level.

"With everybody up here from Scheuring Speed Sports - this is pretty exciting," said Malinoski. "Everybody came through. Darrin's up here with this first-ever podium. Tim raced great - again. My Ski-Doo pulled another great holeshot ... I'm speechless!"

When the green light shone on the start of the weekend's final even Malinoski was gone. Down the Spirit Mountain straight like he was racing against a field of stock sleds. Malinoski railed into the first turn and rode mistake-free, through countless lapped riders in the lack-of-snow-shortened race, and through cleanly to the checkers. There was never a doubt.

Behind Malinoski early were Mees and Polaris' Justin Broberg. Two relatively new guys up front in the pack, mainly because the usual front-running suspects - Martin, Hibbert & Tremblay - started outside the top four. Team AMSOIL/Polaris' Ross Martin, the winner of Friday's $10K AMSOIL DOMINATOR®, was all the way back in 12th qualifying position.

Tucker Hibbert (Arctic Cat) and Tremblay would collide on lap one, though both managed to rail back out of the turn where they got together. But this set the multi-time former ACS champ Hibbert back to 8th place early on in the 24-lap contest ... a position you don't want to be in on such a small track with so many sleds (15). Tremblay, who qualified back in the 9th position, had a much better run at it, moving up to 3rd before getting past Mees for 2nd on lap 13 of the roughly 24-second laps.

As the podium position leaders spread out, Martin put on the best charge at race's end as he moved past Broberg into 2nd and set his site on Mees. With two laps to go Malinoski had all but checked out and the fans' attention focused on Martin and Mees - with Mees holding off the hard-charging Martin for his first-ever podium. Hibbert then managed to round out the top ten.

"To get up here with my other two teammates - everybody crying - this is just so exciting," said Mees. "My adrenaline was going on the first few laps, then Tim (Tremblay) got by me and that was OK. But nobody after that was going to!"

"He (Mees) didn't let me get by him that easy. But no dirty stuff ... we're all teammates," said Tremblay. "I just held my line and the rest was pretty good."

Malinoski leaves Duluth with a 14-point lead over Tremblay in the standings. Martin sits third, with Tucker Hibbert and Mees roudning out the top five.

Rounds three and four of AMSOIL Championship Snocross, presented by Traxxas, will be at northern Michigan's Blackjack Resort, Dec. 7-8.

AMSOIL Collaboration with 742 Marketing Made Big Impact at SEMA

AMSOIL Collaboration with 742 Marketing Made Big Impact at SEMA

When it comes to automotive style and substance, Jeff Maldanado of 742 Marketing knows what it takes to create a show-worthy car that gets people talking. Just a few years ago Maldonado was a novice on the car-show scene, having shown up at a local Scion car show in Hollywood out of curiosity. Today, he is the president of 742 Marketing, which represents remarkable vehicles from the east coast to the west coast and beyond. Not just anybody with a tuner or show car can become a member of 742 Marketing; only those with a true passion and commitment to their craft are asked to join.

AMSOIL partnered with Maldonado & 742 Marketing for the 2012 SEMA show, and Maldonado and his team delivered some of the best feature vehicles on the show floor. AMSOIL Racing got Maldonado’s take on the car-show scene and why it draws such a following.

AMSOIL Racing: How did you become a car guy?

Jeff Maldonado: It all started one day when I heard on the radio about a Scion car show in North Hollywood, and I was curious to see what it was all about. I showed my mainly stock tC and met some cool people who later invited me to join their team (Team Sciontific). Six years later here I am, running the strongest and well-known individual marketing company in the U.S. with vehicles from the east to west coasts and affiliates in all parts of the world.

AR: What is it about SEMA that gets people so jazzed?

JM: From my personal view SEMA has always been a goal to reach with my personal builds. Why? Because when you are sponsored by many companies, what better way to pay back their commitment with you by showcasing their brands at the biggest show in the world. SEMA fans are driven by the wow factor throughout the halls and in the unique builds that showcase year after year. New product and innovative ideas are what jazzed me the first year I attended in 2009 with my 2006 Scion tC as a Smartwax featured ride. Ever since then I've showcased while trying to keep the wow factor alive.

AR: What led you to choose a Scion for your personal vehicle?

JM: At the time it wasn't about clubs or the scene, it was just about what I could afford and the Scion tC was the perfect fit for me. Now I’ve become a loyal Scion/Toyota customer and I even got hired at a Toyota dealership as a Scion Manager because of my involvement with the scene.

AR: What changes have you seen in the car scene these past 10 years?

JM: For as long as I’ve been on the scene I’ve noticed Honda losing popularity and Scion/Nissan and others gaining street power in the show and race scene. Teams disappear and new ones come up with new styles. Drag racing is being overtaken by Drift and crazy transformer-style body kits are replaced with simple and clean cars.

AR: Cars have both a “sex appeal” aspect and a performance aspect. When it comes to performance, the role lubricants play has historically been underappreciated. Have you seen a change in that over the past few years? (In other words, are more young people today recognizing the importance of premium synthetics like AMSOIL?)

JM: Yes, in the years I’ve been doing SEMA I see more and more of the oil recognition amongst the show and race vehicles. I know a few of my club members will buy synthetic instead of regular oil as a result of us using it and giving good feedback.

AR: Any plans yet for your next personal project vehicle?

JM: Not yet, the FR-S will be returning at least 4 more times to SEMA with different styles.

AR: Where do you hope to see 742 Marketing in 10 years?

JM: 742 is growing every day, and new opportunities are being presented to us that have a big impact on what 742 could be in the future. We stand as a multi-level brand with focus in the automotive and apparel business that tomorrow can evolve into much more. "I HOPE" to me is more like "I WANT" to be the biggest and most reputable aftermarket consulting and marketing company in the U.S., and to be the source for companies like AMSOIL to reach out to.

AR: Do you have a quote that describes you?

JM: hahaha funny you ask that... everyone in the scene now has started to know me for my famous quote "DOWORKSON" that came from Rob and Big "DOWORK," but I added my idea to it to be different.

In an industry where everyone looks to stand out, that hard work is paying off as evidenced by the results being turned out by Jeff Maldonado and his 742 Marketing team.

Vehicles pictured are those of the 742 Marketing team that were featured at SEMA, each one running AMSOIL products.

PRO PROFILE: Robbie Malinoski

Last season started with a bang for two-time AMSOIL Championship Snocross (ACS) champion Robbie Malinoski. After just missing out on victory in the inaugural AMSOIL DOMINATOR race, Malinoski took the checkered flag the next day in the first points race of the season. The two-time Winter X Games medalist carried the momentum through the winter, finishing the season third overall. At 31, Malinoski is considered an elder statesman in the world of snocross, but his passion to race is as strong as anyone’s. As he told AMSOIL Racing, his #4 Ski-Doo is dialed in for the season opener in Duluth, Minn. and he’s ready to hit the snow.

AMSOIL Racing: Ross Martin got the better of you in the DOMINATOR race last year. How difficult is that race and what are your plans to win it this year?

Malinoski: The race is not too bad; it’s heads-up racing, so your focus is just on one guy, which makes life a little easier. The plan this year is the same: wide open for two laps and let the rest fall into place.

AMSOIL Racing: Compared to some riders, you started in snocross at a later age. What were you doing until then and what got you into the sport?

Malinoski: I was at a crossroads in my life at the time I started. I had just graduated from high school and was searching for some direction, so my dad gave me an option to work at his shop in exchange for a season of racing, and I never looked back. Before that, motocross was all that I was doing.

AMSOIL Racing: Is there one victory in your career that means more than any of the others?

Malinoski: I think last year in Duluth was one that I will always hold on to. It took place in AMSOIL’s backyard, and I came out swinging. I have never experienced so much excitement from staff and sponsors than following that win.

AMSOIL Racing: You’ve won ACS championships and Winter X Games medals. What’s left for you to accomplish in snowmobile racing?

Malinoski: As a racer, you never feel like you have made it, and maybe that’s why I am still racing. I think if that feeling ever sets in, then I know that I have raced my last race. But I am more hungry than ever, and I still get nervous before every race.

AMSOIL Racing: Last summer you took on a unique role – fighting forest fires. How did that come about?

Malinoski: I had called [team owner] Steve [Scheuring] that summer and told him if he had some jobs that he needed done, I was his man. So he called and said there was a fire down south, and that [head mechanic] Tony [Clement] and I were leaving the next morning. Then I was gone, so I never had a moment to think about what I was getting into. That’s how it all came to be; it was a great experience.

The 2012-2013 AMSOIL Championship Snocross (ACS) season opens in Duluth

RACE PREP: AMSOIL DOMINATOR® - Duluth, Minn.

The 2012-2013 AMSOIL Championship Snocross (ACS) season opens with the AMSOIL Duluth National November 23-25 in Duluth, Minn. Kicking off the weekend will be the second annual AMSOIL DOMINATOR race. Sixteen of the sport’s top riders will compete for the $10,000 prize in head-to-head, bracket-style elimination races, with the winner of each one-on-one race advancing to the next round. After four rounds of racing, one rider will stand alone at the top of Spirit Mountain as the newly crowned AMSOIL DOMINATOR.

“The AMSOIL DOMINATOR race was one of the most intense races for me last year,” said Team AMSOIL/Judnick Motorsports racer and defending DOMINATOR champion Ross Martin. “It is the first race of the year and everyone is still working through sled setups and tunings, not to mention the nerves that come along with the first race of the year. It makes it even more challenging because the race is so short – you have to give it your all for a couple of laps, so there is no room for mistakes or you will be eliminated. I won the DOMINATOR race last year, and I plan on winning it again this year!"

AMSOIL is the title sponsor and Exclusive Official Oil of AMSOIL Championship Snocross and the AMSOIL DOMINATOR.

Maximizes Power and Efficiency

AMSOIL Motorcycle Octane Boost (MOB) increases octane for power and efficiency. It is designed to improve startup performance and eliminate engine ping and knock for increased power at low-rpm operation. Motorcycle Octane Boost contains detergents that help combustion chambers and fuel delivery systems maintain cleanliness for optimum performance. At the recommended treat rate, it does not harm catalytic converters or oxygen sensors and is compatible with all other AMSOIL fuel additives.

See Pricing Information or Place an Order

Maximizes Power & Performance

When treated at 1.3 oz. per gallon of fuel, Motorcycle Octane Boost increases the octane of gasoline up to three numbers. Increased octane improves power and can eliminate performance-robbing and potentially damaging engine knock or ping (see below).

Improves Low-rpm Performance

Engine knock is especially noticeable in some motorcycles during idle or low-rpm operation and high-temperature driving. Most modern bikes are equipped with sophisticated knock-detection systems that can alter spark timing and the air-to-fuel mixture until knock ceases. Although these systems protect the engine from damage, they can also cause reduced horsepower and poor low-rpm operability. AMSOIL Motorcycle Octane Boost helps reduce the need for knock-detection systems to compensate, ensuring maximum low-rpm power and performance in modern bikes.

Cleans Harmful Deposits

Because Motorcycle Octane Boost contains active detergents, it can help maintain efficiency. For clean up, however, AMSOIL recommends treating gasoline with AMSOIL Quickshot®, which contains a greater concentration of cleaning agents.

What is engine knock and why does it matter?

The tendency of a hydrocarbon fuel, such as gasoline, to knock is measured by its octane number. Lower numbers denote a greater knock tendency; higher numbers denote greater knock control. "Engine knock" is a reference to the sound made from an uncontrolled and early ignition of fuel in the combustion chamber. It causes a knocking or pinging sound, robs the engine of power and can cause catastrophic engine damage. Knock may be eliminated by increasing the fuel's octane.

What is Research Octane Number?

Research Octane Number (RON), Motor Octane Number (MON) and Anti-Knock Index (AKI) are the three most common octane ratings. AKI, the rating with which most North American motorists are familiar, is typically displayed on gas pumps as the average of the fuel's RON and MON [(R+M)/2]. RON, however, is the most common industry rating. Therefore, AMSOIL uses the RON rating when conducting performance tests and product validation. Gasoline's RON generally is a few numbers higher than the AKI posted on the gas pump (e.g. 87 octane fuel, or regular pump gas, has a RON of about 91-92).

When marketing their products, some additive manufacturers have adopted a points system where 10 points equals one octane number. A claim that an additive increases octane 30 points translates into an increase of three octane numbers. This approach is often used only to artificially strengthen marketing claims and is not endorsed by AMSOIL.

Treat Rate

One 4-oz. bottle of AMSOIL Motorcycle Octane Boost treats four to six gallons of gasoline. Slight overtreatment causes no issues,

APPLICATIONS

Motorcycle Octane Boost is primarily recommended for use in four-stroke air- or liquid-cooled motorcycles manufactured by Harley-Davidson®, Yamaha®, Honda®, Ducati®, BMW®, Triumph® and all other four-stroke motorcycles. It may be used in off-road applications, including ATVs, UTVs and snowmobiles, as an alternative to AMSOIL DOMINATOR® Octane Boost. Note: Clean spills immediately using a clean towel. If left standing, Motorcycle Octane Boost can stain painted or metal surfaces. If cleaned immediately, there is no need for concern.

HEALTH & SAFETY

This product is not expected to cause health concerns when used for the intended application and according to the recommendations in the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).
